Rosa Kim

Rosa Kim is a singer-songwriter, composer, and music educator with over 10 years of experience working with students from ages 3 to 60+. Born in Montreal, Rosa began playing piano at the age of six and has nurtured her love of music ever since. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Toronto (UofT) in 2015, where she studied piano under Lynda Metelsky. Her experience teaching private piano lessons and in classrooms in Korea confirmed her decision to become a teacher, leading her to pursue a Master of Teaching at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at UofT. She is currently working as a teacher for the Toronto District School Board. Outside of teaching, Rosa has performed as a singer-songwriter across the GTA and has composed for the 2020 documentary An Object of Merit.

Rosa’s teaching pedagogy is built upon student-centred learning and the belief that every student brings something unique and meaningful to their instrument. She sees music as a medium through which students can explore themselves and learn to express their own voice. With patience and warmth, she adapts her teaching to the individual interests and goals of each student, whether that may be preparing for RCM Grade 1, transcribing a pop song by ear, or creating their own composition. She provides the scaffolding and structure for students to grow, whilst encouraging metacognitive strategies to help them become more independent in their learning and practice. Through her lessons, Rosa hopes students can develop their confidence, challenge themselves, and ultimately find the joy that comes from making music their very own.

In her free time, Rosa enjoys running, eating sweet treats, and performing with her Korean-indie band named hanoh. She ran her first full marathon this year!
